Exploring Indian mound!

Near the Mississippi, this area has a lot of Indian mounds and artifacts. Today it was sunny spring day, so we went for exploring around valley.
Then,,,,, we found a lot of piece of rocks which look like knives or other tools! This one in the picture was made we think for taking the hide off an animal. it has a sharp blade and has a custom handle with groves chipped in for your fingers to grip in!!! It's amazing!
We continued for walking and found a lots of wild plants! Wow even Royal Fern! I dried it out and we will have with rice??!! Yummy!!!!

There is a stream which has a Crystal clear water and lots of watercress. And also it has some quick sand!!! Watch out!!!

Smash the boiled beans and mix well with salt and Koji. Put them in a pot and keep it for 8 months or so at room temperature . You need to mix the dough ever a couple of month though.

I never expected to see someone making Miso at home here in Wisconsin!!!!!!

We visited Anne-Marie & her husband Wil to see them making Miso ! Anne-Marie from Denmark and Wil from Florida taught healthy cooking around Europe and USA for a long time! Her speciality is 'Macrobiotic'. She learned from Japanese people (Macrobiotic is originally from Japan) She also does Curative Cooking and Nutritional Counseling for life. They make Miso, Natto, Kombu-cha and lots of stuff like this by themselves. Here in Wisconsin, there are a lot of people who have unique skills!!

We have great courses which you can learn about Organic agriculture, Healthy foods, Rural skills with fun hands on activities!

Beaver's Dam

We went for walk around the farm a week ago. We have seen a lot of little plants coming up from underground. I felt lots of life power from them! Cows are out on pasture and the sunshine looks very peceful!
We were walking along the river and found a couple of beaver dams! They love ponds, so they build them.
We looked around the dam and....

Devils Lake

It's spring! Although it was snowing a couple of days ago here in Wisconsin.
It was a sunny day last Sunday so we decided to go to Devils Lake (Wisconsin State Park).
We will have our camping trip for 'English and Country life' course here.
We haven't done outdoor activities for a while! We were all excited!

Do you see the lake? It is still frozen! But you can swim in the cristal clean water in summer!
Rockey Mountains in Wisconsin? ! Yes this is the only rockey mountains for 1000km!
Devil's Lake was originally a gorge of the Wisconsin River prior to the last ice age. During the ice age a chunk of the glacier came up the river valley. It deposited materials and then melted, leaving a pile of debris blocking the river. The river eventually found a new course to where the glacier had been, leaving a portion of the river gorge between the moraines filled with water. This body of water is Devil's Lake.
Hawks were flying in the sky!
We already saw a couple of rock climbers carrying their tools on them and many hikers.
I tried repelling Oh~~~~~~~~how nice I can be a monkey!
After that, we did rock climbing too. I had done only a few time but I defenetry enjoy it!
You should try when you come to the USA!!
Ground Hog looks enjoying spring too!

A Cool Bar in a small town

Chaseburg (Wisconsin USA) is a small village. 300 people, which I never imagine because I have never seen so many people around here. There were 5 bar until last summer. (2 of them had to close because of the flood in 2007)
There is a old and tasteful bar here in Chaseburg.

Sustainable house

I would like to show you Eric's house as well as his maple farm.
They built by themselves. It is super sustainable house and you can feel the tree power!!
How wonderful! I guess people in the country side make almost everything by themselves!

Have a look at their bathroom!!
Sorry to show you this photo if you are eating something.
It looks like normal toilette?! But I can't find where to flash? it doesn't smell either? oh, it`s a composting toilette!
Yes. It goes down into this composting box and they will take it out a couple of times a year. It is great for the earth!

Organic Maple farm

We visited our friend Eric's Organic maple farm! He has 2000 maple trees and makes a lot of yummy maple syrup every year. The process of the syrup is not so easy. I think maple syrup is one of the most appreciable food from nature!
The way of tapping the sap from the maple trees is bit different from how we do it on our farm. instead of collecting the sap in a bucket he collects the sap in lines of tubing that runs into the holding tank outside of the sugar house!
As you already know, maple sap is condensed into maple syrup which became 1/40-50 of
the quantity. This machine has a filter which let water go through and sugar content will be 3-4% to 10%. It helps to save fuel with the next step.

After it is condensed, they cook it for looooooooong time until it becomes syrup. 70% sugar

Eric has made 600 Gallon of syrup from 300.000 Gallon of sap so far this year!!

You might have Maple Valley maple syrup on your kitchen table!Enjoy your pancakes, crepe, coffee you name it!! Thank you for making such a wonderful Maple Syrup!!

Green energy!

A Crude Awakening'
We watched the documentary ' A Crude Awakening'.
It was shocking and made us very scared!
Oil does make people wealthy or poor and it even causes wars. But now we can not live without it. We are running out of oil soon. Our grand children generation won't be able to travel around the world because the oil price will be so expensive. flying will be only for the 0.1% of people that are filthy rich and can afford it. Can you imagine our life without oil??!!

http://www.cnn.com/2008/TECH/science/04/01/algae.oil/index.html#cnnSTCVideo
Algae are among the fastest growing plants in the world, and about 50 percent of their weight is oil. That lipid oil can be used to make biodiesel for cars, trucks, and airplanes.
100,000 gallons of algae oil a year per acre, compared to about 30 gallons per acre from corn; 50 gallons from soybeans. check out the video at the link above^
But Al Darzins of the National Renewable Energy Lab said the world is still probably 5 to 10 years away from any substantial use of biofuels.

Obama & Obama City

On the way home from the air port, we stopped by 'Cheese corner' Dairy Sandwich shop.
We saw those bottles in the photo.
I must be in the USA! Yes. 2008 is the Election!!
American talk about politics all the time young and old.
I guess it's because they choose their own president by themselves which is bit different from Japan.

If you are planning to come to the US for your study or home-stay, you better know a little bit about politics . For sure they will ask you about politics in your home country too! I was asked so many times,,,,, But it is just one of the things that they are interested so don't worry too much.

When I was in japan last month, I saw such a funny thing on TV.
There is a City that people support Mr.Obama even they don't have right to vote.
The reason why they support him, because the name of their city is 'OBAMA' that's all!!
Take a look at this website.
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/03/04/obamas-backing-obama/
I wonder what American think about this!!

Indian Home

We went for Hiking to see Indian home/shelter in over hang!
Through corn field to forest.
Here is the home! It's too cold in winter they must have been here in Summer!
We kept walking to see next one which is bigger and still has ice on the ground!
I was thinking about Aborigine in Australia. They also lived similar place. US and Australia have only a couple of 100 years history as a new country but from Indian era, it is loooooooooong history. This area is especially near the Mississippi so you can see lots of Indian stuff.
We hiked on toward to the Kickapoo river......
We found such a cute plant! The plant melted the snow around it to come up from underground!!!!
It's little but strong!!!
Oh Monkey!!!!!
Beginning of Spring. The dark hollows are still covered with snow but spring is coming slowly but surely.
Seeds are awaking and little plants are working hard. I should get power from them!
