Cooking with Amish??!! Is it possible? Well we were so glad to have our Amish friend Mary here. She accepted our favor kindly!! I didn't take any photos at her house out of respect for her Amish culture.

They don't have a telephone at home but Mary comes to Viroqua farmer's market every Saturday so I visited her there to arrange the cooking class! We decided to bake some bread for the class! I'm very excited!!And I saw Mika who is also from Japan staying on Adrienne's farm, they produce Sour kraut and Kimuchi! http://www.organicpowerkraut.com/ Her farm is just cross a street from Amish Mary's farm!! Both of them have beautiful farms!!

Her oven is heated by wood because they don't use electricity nor gas. her and her husband have 7 boys! It's a big family but as an Amish family it is quite average size. When we arrived at Mary's the boys were working with horses on their farm. Mary came out and welcomed us! We went into her house and saw the oven. She already started the fire and it was heating some water for bread! The photo above is not her oven it's from Norskedalen http://norskedalen.org/ but her oven is very similar.
Let's start bread making! Mary showed Keiko how to knead the dough and Keiko kneaded her own bread dough! Once she got this experience, she said confidently that she can bake at home! That is the whole idea behind our hands on activities!! I thought the Amish uses lot of white stuff such as white sugar, white flour. but Mary used whole wheat and home grown rye flour which is way healthier! She usually uses lard but she had run out so we used coconuts oil instead. Well now we are ready to put the loafs into the oven!!

Ta-da----- Yummy!!!!!!! Especially when they are baked by wood stove oven!!!!

She said she bakes 12 loaf at a time 2-3 days per week!! And I asked how often she uses the wood stove in Summer. She said almost everyday!!! she has to cook for her family of 9! While we are baking, neighbor Amish lady and her children visited Mary to help her with some canning. Mary had so many zucchini so they made Zucchini relish and canned it! She also picked a pumpkin and baked us pumpkin bar which were delicious!!! Her youngest boy brought us fresh watermelon from the garden. It was nice and sweet! Wow we had such a special time with our Amish friends!!

She gave us watermelon, melon, relish, tomatoes and onions too. It was our (the Little Country School ) first experience 'cooking class with Amish'! It was very special!! Thank you so much Mary!!

It was first time Finn spent time without Mom or Dad. Katie our friend and baby sitter has magic hands for babies! When we came home, he was relaxing in her arm!! Thanks Katie!!
