ゴート、ラベンダーファームとハレアカラ Goat and Lavender farm and Haleakala

この日はハレアカラへ。その手前にあるヤギファームに寄ってみた。その名もサーフィンゴートデイリーファーム！ウィスコンシンでファームツアーを企画する身としてはファームツアーに参加してみねば！（１人７ドル） Haleakala day! On the way there, we stopped by Surfing goat dairy farm. the name sounds very Hawaiian~! Let's join the farm tour!
ヤギのミルクから作られる石鹸、その他、おもにチーズが販売されている。They have many different flavor of fresh goat cheese and soaps made from goat milk.
ツアーの初めはまずはフレッシュゴートチーズの試食。チーズ王国ウィスコンシンから来た二人は真剣。
アイボリーコースト（ブラックペッパー）、マウイシークレット（オリーブオイル、レモンの皮、フレッシュタイム）そして、ピンポンボールはオリーブオイルとガーリック漬けのボール型チーズを購入！Clovis and Jane are very serious about cheese, they are from Wisconsin!! We choose Ivory Coast(Black pepper), Maui secret(Olive oil, Lemon zest, fresh thyme) and Ping pong ball (Olive oil and garlic) to buy!
さていよいよヤギにご対面！餌（＄６）Here they are! You can feed baby goats ($6) !
ベイビーヤギ。かわい～～～～！この後はミルクを絞る設備やチーズを作る作業場を見て説明を聞く。ツアー自体は、、、、う～ん、ど～だろう。もっとミルクを絞っている所とか実際に見られるといいな～。
さて、ゴートチーズもゲットした事だし、そろそろお腹がすいて来た、、、。チーズはもちろんゲットするつもりだったので、クラッカーとちょっとしたピクニックランチを用意してきたから眺めがいい場所でランチタイムにしよっかな～とたまたま通りかかったクラというエリアにあるいちごファーム。Oh~ babies are so cute! The tour guide explained how to milk and showed us the facility. Well the tour itself is not too impressive but nice to pet the babies!! We were getting hungry. Let's have a picnic! ?? We found a strawberry farm with nice views and picnic tables!
このエリアはマウイの中でもかなりお気に入り。海の景色が高台から眺められる！このファーム、かわい～！This area is called KULA, it is one of our favorite place on Maui! We can see the ocean and all of west maui from Kula. it has gorgeous views!!
お店にはイチゴはもちろん、新鮮なお野菜がた～くさん！しっかりたっぷりゲットしました！They have lots of strawberries and also fresh vegetables! Jane and I were so excited! Look! I can't hold any more!!
ピクニックテーブルがあったので早速ランチタイム！腹ごしらえが終わったら次はラベンダーファームへ！ Lunch time!!! We had the goat cheese and strawberries and some snacks!! uuuuuuu yummy!! Well now we are going to the Lavender farm!
シーズンではなさそうだけどこれ、一面紫の時にきてみたいな～～～！ラベンダー以外にもきれいに色々なお花が植えられていました！It wasn't really season but can you imagine when it has lots of purple lavender??!! They also have a nice garden with many interesting flowers!


ガーデンの入場料は無料。お店ではブーケも購入可能！その他ラベンダーのエッセンスや、スキンケア用品、ラベンダークッキー、シロップ、いろんなグッツが売っています。ラベンダーコーヒーはミルクを入れると更にラベンダーの香りが引きたってかなりいけてました！そしてお料理用のドライラベンダーを購入！最近ハーブにはまってます！そろそろハレアカラ山頂へ向かわねば！You can buy this bouquet for $10!! It is beautiful!! They have many lavender goods such as lotions, essences, cookies, lavender for cooking etc. We tasted lavender coffee! Put little bit of milk and you will taste more lavender flavor then coffee flavor! It's so good! OK now we are going to the top of Haleakala!
くねくねした道をどんどん進んで、ハレアカラのクレーターへ到着。今日はきれいに澄んだお天気になった！山頂３０５５ｍ Oh!!!!! Look, it is very clear today!! The top of Haleakala is 12,000ft!
おっと！ハワイ島もバッチリ見えている！You can see Hawaii Island on a clear day!
ジェーンも空を飛んだ。（恒例になってきました！） Jane flew too! We always fly for our photos when we come here!
ビロクア（ウィスコンシン）のお友達シャーと何年かぶりにマウイで再会のジェーン！シャーは最近このマウイで土地を購入！これからここに娘さんやその旦那さん達とお家を立てていくらしい！楽しみ～！てか、うらやましい、、、、。この後皆で’ハイク’という街にあるレストランで夕食を。このレストランはローカルフード、オーガニック食材を使っている。ディナーにはフィッシュバーガー、デザートにはパッションフルーツチーズケーキ。かなりいけてました！今日も満喫した一日でした！
Char, who is also from Viroqua, and Jane hadn't seen each other for a couple of years. char just bought a property on Maui and was nice enough to show it to us. It is a beautiful spot! The ocean is just light there!!! Then we went for dinner in the Haiku area. The restaurants uses a lot of local organic ingredient and taste great! The passion fruit cheese cake we had for desert was sooooooooo good!!! it was another great day trip!!

ラハイナルアウ Lahaina Lu'au

ウィスコンシンからはるばるママジェーンがやって来た！厳しい寒さのウィスコンシンから解放され早速マンションに付属のプールでウォーミングアップ！
Mama Jane safely landed on Maui on Feb 28th. It's good to escape from the cold Wisconsin weather for a while!! Let's go for swimming and get warmed up!
マウイの天気は本当に予想がつかない。天気が良くなりますように～と願いながらこの日はマウイの西側のドライブと私たちもまだ見ていなかったコロラドのおばあちゃんお勧めのハワイアンルアウを計画。The weather on Maui is always a mystery. We hoped for the best and decided to go for a drive around the west side of Maui and then watch the Old Lahaina Luau that Grandma Lilian suggested.
森林浴に青い海と空。心配した天気も問題なし！We got great weather! It's a beautiful scenic drive! clovis' family loves scenic drives!
ラハイナに到着。ラハイナルアウのお出迎えはトロピカルドリンクとレイ！本当のレイをかけてもらったのってもしかして初めてかも！！We arrived in Lahaina. They welcomed us with tropical drinks and leis! I think this is the first time that I got a real lei!! Feels like Hawa~ii~!!
夕暮れの海辺。とっても絵になる！Beautiful sun set!

何を掘ってるの？What are they digging for?!


じゃ～ん。土の中でベイクされた豚まる一匹！お料理に出されます！They baked a whole pig underground. It's going to be our dinner! Wow!!!!
お料理はビュッフェ形式になっていて、品数豊富。さっきの豚肉を初め、牛ステーキ、グァバでマリネしたチキン、ハワイアン名物のタロイモで作るポイ、タロイモの葉っぱでポークを巻いたもの、タロイモの葉っぱを焚いたホウレンソウによく似た味のお野菜料理、アヒというお魚のポキ（アヒの生をゴマ油やその他ソースと混ぜたもの）アヒはアジに似ている。ロミロミサーモン、カニのアイランドサラダ、タコサラダ、スイートポテトのココナッツミルクソースその他本当にたくさんの種類があっていつの間にかお皿はいっぱい。It's buffet style! There were so many kind of dishes. Many Hawaiian dishes such as The BBQ Poke, beef stake, Guava Glazed chicken, Poi, grilled pork wrapped with Taro leaves, simmered Taro leaves that had a similar taste to spinach, Ahi Poke LomiLomi Salmon etc. → http://www.oldlahainaluau.com/flash.html
フラダンスを見ながら、カクテルとともにディナーを堪能。（アルコールやソフトドリンクも好きなだけ飲む事ができる）While we were having dinner, we also enjoy the hula dancers.
デザートは４種類。4 kinds of deserts!!
メンイのパフォーマンスが繰り広げられる。フラダンスはかつて神とのコミュニケーションの役割を果たしたそうです。また、文字がなかったハワイアンはこの踊りで伝統を受け継いで行きました。キリ スト教が入ってきたことでカルチャーも変わり、モダンなハワイアン文化が誕生します。こんなストーリーをフラダンスで語ります。The last performance is the main one. Hula as it was meant to be performed with love and reverence. The ancient hula was a way of communicating with the Gods. It is accompanied by chanting. The performance shows you about the history of Hawaii. The missionaries brought many changes.

マウイにもホールフーズがやって来た Whole foods open on Maui

さてアメリカではおなじみのナチュラル、オーガニックスーパーで知られるホールフーズがマウイ島にもこの２月２４日オープンとなった。早速いってみよう。Whole foods Maui Open on Feb 24th! Let's check it out!
チーズコーナー！
洗剤、コスメグッツその他あらゆる分野がナチュラルなものでそろえられている。
お惣菜コーナー、お肉コーナー、そしてテイクアウトでは寿司やピザなど色々なものが変えて外のベンチで食べることもできる。さて、ブログでも紹介をしてきたようにマウイにもいくつかナチュラル、オーガニック食材のお店がある。パイアにあるMana Foods　カフルイにあるDown to Earthそしてファーマーズマーケットでは地元でとれたお野菜等が売られる。さて、今回は大型のチェーン店が入って来たのでこれからどうなる事やら！
感想としては、商品の並び方もかわいく、女性に人気がありそうな雰囲気。ローカルの食材も多い。ただ、ホールフーズの方が同じ商品でも他のお店よりも多少割高で売られているような感じだった。それは仕方がないのかな～。駐車場が広くマウイモールと同じ敷地にあるので便利。オーガニック製品のチョイスがたくさんある。ナチュラル食材のお店でよく見落としがちなのが、そのスーパーの中で売られるものはすべてオーガニックだと思ってしまいがち。例えば、ホールフーズブランドの365エブリデーバリュープロダクトには、オーガニックと書いていない物はオーガニックではないし、お肉コーナーなどで量り売りしているものもオーガニックと表示がない物はオーガニックではない。という事も頭に入れておこう！どんどんナチュラル、オーガニック系のスーパーが増えてくれるのはそれだけ消費者のニーズも有るってことかな！？だったら嬉しいな～！！

Maui has a couple of Natural food markets such as Mana food, Down to Earth and sometimes Farmer's market has organic stuff too. Whole foods on Maui is by the Maui mall. It's convenient location and they have many kinds of selections though it is bit more expensive than other shops. It is always nice to see more people are getting interested in Organic and natural foods!

津波警告 on Maui Tsunami warning on Maui

2月２７日、夜中に元住んでいた人から連絡が来た。
津波の警報が出されるかもしれないので、６時位にもしかしたら
非難警告が出されるかもしれないとのこと。
前住んでいたお家はオーシャンフロントだったので津波が来たら大変！
今回引越したお家は、マンションの６階。海、山を眺められるビューはお気に入り。
朝になり、朝ご飯をいつものようにベランダで食べた。いつもに増してよい天気！
ハイキングでも行きたいな～ってぐらい。海もすごく穏やかで青い空が広がる。
すると町じゅうにサイレンが鳴り響いた。３０分おきに何時間も。
本当に来るのかな～結局前の家の人たちは朝６時にヘリコプターが飛んできて避難命令が出たようで
非難したらしい。
Feb 27th in the middle of the night our phone rang. It was from Paul who is a caretaker at our previous house on the Ocean, he forgot that we moved out. (We moved a couple of weeks ago)
He said that they might have to evacuate in the early morning. The place where we live now is on the 6th floor about one mile from the ocean. In the morning we had breakfast on the balcony like we always do with the view of the mountains and the ocean. It was absolutely gorgeous weather. We even thought about going for a hike. even though it was a nice blue sky and the ocean was so calm. A helicopter came to the ocean houses that we used to live at and woke all of our old roommates up around 6 AM telling them they had to evacuate to higher ground. A Tsunami might be coming!


結局この日はこのまま穏やかなお天気が続いて終わりました。
日本から、アメリカ本土からと色々な人がニュースを聞いて
心配してメールや電話をしてくれたみなさん、ありがとう！無事です！
But it was just beautiful weather all day on Maui and the Tsunami never came. We are totally safe!! Thank for your calls and E-mails everyone!!

ビロクア仲間とマウイＢＢＱ Maui BBQ with Viroqua friends!

先日ウィスコンシンのビロクアエリアに住んでいるお友達が親戚を尋ねにマウイに来ている事を知り、早速ＢＢＱを計画！あんなに小さな町だけど今までにマウイで再会したビロクア近辺に住んでいた人は結構いる事にびっくり！A couple of weeks ago, we found out that some of our friends from VIROQUA (Our little town in Wisconsin) are here on Maui visiting their relatives. Let's have a BBQ on a beach!! It's a small world! We have seen quite a few people from our little town here on Maui!
じゃ～ん　カレンが用意してくれたＱ。ハワイ風に生のパイナップルをふんだんに使って！お肉は１晩自家製のたれに漬け込んでおいてくれたそうで！これがまたとってもおいし～～～！マウイビーフにマウイオニオン。これぞハワイアン、いやマウイＢＢＱ！！ＢＢＱの後はスノーケリング。ウィスコンシンボーイのロビーは生まれて初めてスノーケリングに挑戦した。感動～～～～って言っていました！マウイのビーチのいいところはボートに乗らなくてもビーチからでも充分サンゴが楽しめるところ！Look at those Qs!! Karen made gorgeous BBQ!　Fresh Pineapple Maui beef that was marinated with her special sauce and Maui Onions! It's a Hawaiian BBQ! Even a Maui BBQ!!! After the BBQ, we did snorkeling. Roby, who is from Wisconsin snorkeled for the first time. He said it's awesome! Beaches on Maui have great reefs and easy access for snorkeling!
と、すっかりリラックスした時間を過ごしていると、、、、、ビーチ近くに小型のプライベートの船が転覆？！ヘリコプターが飛んできた！We were having such a nice and relax time together. Suddenly a little private boat came in odd looking,,,,,,???!!!! it was driving toward shore and sinking at the same time!!!! then it ran right into the reef!!!! wow, see it below the helicopter!
地上からも応援隊が。the fire man came.
あ～あ、サンゴに引っかかってビーチまでたどりつけず、泳げる人は泳いでビーチまで、そして船の中に摘んでいたビールやクーラーボックスも救出。ジェットスキーがやってきたけど、サンゴへのダメージを考えるとハラハラドキドキ。結局この転覆した船は２日間ぐらいずっとそのままで、潮が満ちて少し水深ができたころ引き上げられた様子。サンゴってほんと１センチ育つのに何十年とかかるともいわれてるんだから、もっと気をつけないとね、、、、。こんなアクシデントもありながら、１日、皆でのんびりマウイのビーチを楽しみました！they escaped by swimming and the coast gaurd on jet ski helped them carry their cooler and other stuff to shore. Oh,,, no,,,,,, probably the poor coral got damaged so much,,,. The boat stayed there for a couple of days, they couldn't move it because the water is very sallow there and filled with lots of coral. Coral takes so many years to grow. we should be more careful!!!
Overall, we had great time with our Viroqua friends!! Thanks Karen, Bill and Robby!!

レッドサンドビーチと溶岩の通り道 Red sand beach and lava tube on Hana High way

ハナハイウェイドライビングはマウイ観光の中でも特にお勧め。ブログでも度々出てきてるけど、今回は新しい発見をした。ハナの町の近くに、レッドサンドビーチ又はドラゴンバックビーチと呼ばれているらしい。先日はハワイアンモンクス（アザラシ）が現れたらしい！driving the road to Hana is one of the high light to do on Maui. We have done the circle a couple of times but every time we find something new!! This time, we heard about a Red sand Beach (Dragon back beach) so we tried to find it! A couple of days before we went there, our friends saw Hawaiian Monks seals there!!たどり着くまでは少しハイキングしなければならない。落ちないでね～～～ We have to hike up and down some scary stuff to get there.
と、そこに現れたのは！！！赤い砂のビーチだ！近づいて見ると、、、、。Getting closer!!! Wow that is it!! Red sand beach!!
うわ～プールになってる！マウイは火山でできているから、波の浸食で削られた軟らかい層と、まだ残っている硬い溶岩質でこんな地形ができたんだ！プールの中には波が押し寄せるごとに少々水が入ってきてまた出ていく。早速このプールで泳いでみました！うわ～さいこ～～～！Water ate away the soft layer of soil but the lava layer still remains, making a pool!! When waves come, water comes into the pool and go out. How cool it is!! Of course we enjoyed swimming in there!!
さて、今度は、ハナハイウェイドライブのツアー等に参加するとたいてい立ち寄ると思われるステートパーク。ここは、足場も比較的安全で柵等も整ったステートパーク。キャンプ場もあります。After the beach, we stopped at the state park. There are easier hiking trail so you can bring your family here! And most of the Tour buses stop here.
ここには、溶岩が流れた時に、通った道が洞窟のように残っている。 Lava tube!!
小さな穴をくぐり抜けると What's in there? Let's go inside!
うわ～溶岩が作ったトンネルだ！Wow lava went through here!!
今回は波が比較的穏やかだったのでブローホールからは水は噴き出していなかったけど、岩と岩の間の隙間をみると今にも水が噴きあがってきそうでスリル満点！The waves were too small to come up through the blow whole but if you look between the rocks, it feels like water is coming any minutes!!

お友達と過ごすマウイ Maui with my friend

マウイに来る前に2週間、学生時代からのお友達マキのお家でお世話になった。今回は、彼女がマウイへ2週間やってきた！Maki and I are friends since collage! She visited us for 2 weeks on Maui!
日本から離れているので学生時代のお友達と会えるのは本当に貴重！I don't have so many chances to spend with my old friends as I am away from Japan. But those 2 weeks, It was so nice to be with her!
マキは11年間エアロビクスやヨガのインストラクターで活躍した。ここでもやっぱりヨガは欠かさない！She used to be an aerobics and Yoga instructor for 11 years. Of course, she can't live without doing it! マウイの観光も要所を押さえてっと。
西マウイドライブ　It was her first tropical vacation. I bet she did most of the things to do on Maui except whale watching. ( She gets sea sick easily.,,,, ) but we saw a couple of Whales from our garden!
〇ラハイナの街 Town of Lahaina

海でスノーケルをやった事のなかったまきはお家のプールでまずは練習。その後海へスノーケル。ウミガメも2匹も現れて、サンゴ礁もとってもきれいでした！She had never done snorkeling before so she practiced in the swimming pool then we took her to one of the best snorkeling spot on Maui!
We saw 2 sea turtles and lots of coral!ハレアカラ山　この日はちょっと雲がかかってました。 Haleakala, it was bit cloudy.
