町の高校生たちの授業の一環として３週間集中的にサステイナブルアグリカルチャーの授業が展開される。講師はおなじみジェーン。今回はお隣ミネソタ州にあるドリームエイカーズというエコファーム、並びにサステイナブルライフを学びにキャンプトリップへ。Sustainable agriculture class at Youth Initiative High School http://www.yihs.net/ They have been taking a sustainable agriculture class by Jane. They went to Dream acres in Minnesota.
ファーム内には興味深い施設が沢山ある。これは南向きにセッティングされたソーラーシステムとグリーンハウス。その隣にはブリックオーブン、そしてサマーキッチンとなっている。春から秋にかけて毎週ここではウッドストーブで焼くおいしいおいしいピッツァが楽しめます。今回高校生たちも自分たちでピッツァを焼きました！There are a lot of neat system on the farm. This is their green house and summer kitchen. They have a pizza night that they make pizza by brick oven every Fridays. Students made yummy pizza!
グリーンハウスではソーラーによって暖められたホットウォーターパイプが通っていて、それが耐熱力があるロックの壁を作ることで温度が保てる様になっている。This green house is so neat! There is a hot water pipe that is heated by solar goes around in the greenhouse to keep the temperature.
オーナーのアビーとトッドが実際に住んでいるお家を拝見。電気はすべてソーラーシステムからのエネルギーのみ。見事なロックで囲まれたウッドストーブがお部屋の中心に。トッド曰くー１５度平均のミッドウェストの冬も５日間家を空けても帰宅した時には１０度前後を保っていたという。通常ウィスコンシンやミネソタと言った冬、寒いエリアでは出かける時もヒーターをオンにしておかないと水道管が破裂したりすることがあるので、ヒーターは常に一定温度を下がらないように設定している。We went into their house. Look it is a huge wood stove covered by rock. They said they left home around Xmas time for 5 days and when they came home it was still around 50 F!!
水道は雨水をためてくみ上げている。They collect rain water.
冷蔵庫は使わずクールな温度が保てる地下室に蓄えたり、They have no electric refrigerator. They keep foods in their basement
アーミッシュ達も使っているアイスルームにて保存。保冷出来るように作られた建物に氷を蓄えた電気いらずの冷蔵庫。and they built an ice room so they use just ice not electricity!
ウッドストーブでのお料理。また、部屋を温める役割も果たします。Wood stove oven for cooking and also keeps the heat.
今回はこのウッドストーブを使って、モッツァレラチーズメーキングクラスをして頂きました。Students leaned how to make fresh mozzarella cheese and they used the wood fire stove to heat up milk!!!
ギュッと絞って出来上がり！新鮮な牛乳で作るできたてのフレッシュモッツァレラチーズは最高でした！It was very yummy!!!

私もチャレンジしたけどやってみるととっても難しい。I also tried with the students. It was very hard!!!
トッドが冬の間一つ一つ手作りした階段の手すり。ほんとに見事！Todd made such a beautiful stuff. He said it took him a hole winter!!
滞在中はジェーンを初め生徒たちも手伝ってのお料理。Student and teachers made nice meal on the farm.
ちょっと寒かったけど翌日はとっても晴れてお日さまの下で、馬や牛を使ったファーミング等を学びました。It was bit cold but Sun came out the second day and they learned how to farm with animals! It was great camp trip.
